WNBP-AWE

Welcome to Wednesday Night Bullet Posting - Ash Wednesday Edition.

  • I've not read a lot of new titles yet this year.

  • The library's not been terribly forthcoming with new stuff.

  • I am re-reading The Dresden Files, though.

  • The next book comes out soon.

  • On Friday of last week, I received an email from one of my student's parents regarding said student's performance in my class. Parent of Struggling Student first thanked me for the "heads up" regarding the situation.

  • Please keep in mind that these are college students and therefore the warning notices go directly to them not to their parents.

  • PoSS expressed distress over SS's struggles and wanted to know just how much difficulty SS is actually experiencing.

  • PoSS went on to inform me that there would be heck to pay if SS fails this class because there are two computer savvy people at whom who are (apparently) willing to help SS.

  • PoSS didn't use the work heck, actually.

  • I'm quite certain that you know exactly which word was really used.

  • I did not answer this email. In fact, I have no intention of ever answering this email or any others like it.

  • I refuse to respond to helicopter parents.

  • See previous clicky on college students.

  • I told SS that I will not acknowledge PoSS's email. SS seemed a bit embarrassed at PoSS contacting a professor.

  • SS, by the way, has been studying and scored top marks on today's exam.

  • Let's all hope that SS studies as hard for next week's test.

  • Four students commented on how taking the practice test really helped them to do well on today's exam.

  • You think?

  • Since we had the test in class today, class finished up a wee bit early. I took advantage of this early dismissal to take a nice little walk before Neatnik's arrival by school bus.

  • It is still winter and the temperature was only 37°F but that's why I own gloves.

  • I have noticed that you cannot knit while wearing gloves.

  • After school, Neatnik was up for some walking so we adjourned to the local mall. Each "lap" of the mall is a mile.

  • We walked two laps.

  • Two laps of the mall is a full sock's worth of gusset decreases.

  • Gloves are unnecessary inside the mall.

  • I created a spreadsheet to track my walking mileage.

  • There are cells for miles walked each day, weather conditions, and also for a running total.

  • There's even a little table containing several possible routes and their mileage and descriptions.

  • I think I am going to like this system.
I guess that's about it for tonight, except to day thanks to the folks who mailed us Box Tops for Education. I'm going to count them up tomorrow night and send them to school with the Neatnik on Friday morning.

Wow. Parents of college students contacting you. Are these freshmen?

I didn't get my box tops mailed out, drat. But I KNOW there will be another opportunity so I will continue to collect.

Love the bullet points.

We're not allowed to communicate with parents regarding their kid's performance at all. What an annoying parent.

Wow, I wonder if these parents realize that once their "child" is of legal age that some things are lawfully none of their business. My 7th grade student went into hysterics when I asked her if she wanted me to talk to her teacher regarding assigned work groups because the other students were refusing to do anything. She's 12. I agreed to let her handle the situation. Independence means that we let our children make mistakes and try things on their own. Sorry for the ramble, I need my coffee.

Mailed my boxtops - hope you get them in time.

Libraries everywhere are facing the same tough times. Do they buy books? keep the same hours? keep the same number of staff? How do they manage the service to the community if their budget has been slashed? Big issues in library land. [disclaimer - I'm a librarian] In Indiana, specifically Terre Haute, the county wide library system is closing 4 [four!] branches. In Muncie, two or three are closing. Others have a hiring freeze, etc. It's not pretty. /rant

You know, my college career wasn't (nearly as) stellar (as yours), but this craziness is completely beyond my understand.

However, I am developing the sneaking suspicion that TheBoss is a Parent of Similar Mindset (PSM, perhaps). Gah.

P.S. Blogger blocked my attempt to use your supercool cross outs....
Oh well.

Huh! Have you checke said student for the presence of a still attached umbilical cord?

I would be mortified if my parents ever did that. The only time I let me mom contact the college is when they start giving me crap about my immunization or graduation records, which I seem to get a lot. Dern homeschooling.

Oh and once, when my "advisor" forced me into a class that had a prereq to it that I wasn't informed of and the professor took me aside and basically told me I couldn't be in that class, AFTER the drop date. By that time it was too late for a refund too. My mom was furious, so she called and got them to not only refund the ENTIRE amount of fees for 5 credit hours, but she also got it wiped from my record. It was awesome. The "advisor" also got in a lot of trouble! :D

I had a parent arrive in my office one day, (who had taken a 4 hour drive and a day off work) hoping to "clear up" the report I'd made on her son in which I alleged he was cheating. Boy was I happy the chair was in his office! Yeeps, these parents. Of course, he told her he hadn't cheated.
