I thought that as the contest progresses I should maybe give some feedback on the suggestions received. So, let us get right into it, shall we?
- Homemade sidewalk chalk - I had never thought of doing this and I really love the idea. Looked up how to do it on the Internet and it is simple. One cup of plaster of Paris powder, one cup of water, and tempera paint powder to taste. Dead easy.
- Summer reading program - Neatnik loves the library and has her own library card already. My little preschool reader. We are very proud of her and encourage literacy always.
- Zoos - I hear there is a really nice county run zoo about an hour and fifteen minutes from home that we would like to visit this summer. Plans are already in progress to go with CrazyAboutSox, Chatterboy, and Goldilocks.
- Art days - This is a cool one since Neatnik loves AC Moore. Also, we can tie it in with other activities like the sidewalk chalk, scrapbooking zoo visits, whatever.
- Geocaching - Great idea but I'm not sure on the investment. I did a looksee, though, and there are caches in our area. So it is not out of the realm of possibility.
- Park days - This is a great one because our county has an extensive park system including a spray park and age appropriate playground equipment.
- You pick farms - Love this one! We used to have a great strawberry farm to do this. It is now an active adult community. Poop.
- Scavenger hunts - I love scavenger hunts. This may take a bit of parental preparation but it could be so much fun.
- Cooking - Neatnik already helps in the kitchen and loves it. Everyone should learn how to cook, do laundry, drive a nail, replace an electrical switch, and sew on a button.
- Tours - Tried this last summer. Our local candy shop doesn't do tours due to insurance considerations. They have a very old, small, cramped building.
- Tie-dye - Ack! Flashbacks of childhood in the seventies. Great idea.
- Butterfly garden - No. Never. Not a change in hell. I have a pathological fear of butterflies, crickets, praying mantis, and walking sticks. Um, NO.
- Beaches and dolphin cruises - These are major possible during vacation week. I'd like for her to see dolphins.
- Homemade chewing gum - Sorry. We don't chew gum and don't let the Neatnik chew it either. Good idea, just not for us.
- Oobleck - Had to look this one up. Basically this is a science experiment to show kids about polymerization. Messy but neat.
The toe of the second Naga Sock is almost done and I've been working on dishcloths lately. I can put a ball of cotton in my pocket and walk and knit or prop a programming textbook up and knit a dishcloth mindlessly while studying. Speaking of that, I need to sign off this blog post and open my IDE and start coding, before I have to pick up Neatnik from school. .Net rocks.
PS - Woo-hoo! Nine laps in the pool last night. Yay me.

How about Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). Are you familiar? Usually you buy a "share" in the season's produce and they often have work and/or visiting days that you can participate in. The one I have locally offers a discount on your subscription if you put in X number of hours of labor on the farm.
The way I look at it, Sheep and Wool Festivals go without saying. How about the county fair?
I wonder if you could set up a kid-related swap on swapbot or something? Knitbloggers with kids and you put together a small package for parent and child - with plenty o' input from the kids.
A fear of butterflies? Unusual. Wonder where that started.
My son has a fear of flies. Mostly when he is tired though. I do know where that came from. When he was about 4, as we walked off a boat ramp, he was stung 6 times by bees. Several of the stings were on his face. Very traumatic. So any time a buzzing insect flies near him he gets upset. Is sort of annoying when he locks himself in his room when a fly gets in the living room. hehe
You're up to nine laps? That's great!
Since the butterfly idea wasn't a winner, I feel like I should suggest something else. :) What about a field trip to the Humane Society or local no-kill animal shelter? You can collect newspapers to take in or Neatnik can even make a blanket to donate.
Oopsie. heh I should have read your feedback list first! That sidewalk chalk idea sounds so great! We go through SO MUCH sidewalk chalk really fast.
We've done backwards days during the summer -- you know, read a book before you get out of bed, then have dinner, etc. The only thing right in this day is lunch since it's in the middle.
We also have library time -- I'm sure yours does story time too.
And we do a tourist day, where we go to the Arch and the courthouse -- you know, where tourists go.
I've always wanted to take mine to the state fair.
Well, you DID ask for things that were kid-related, and not every (human) kid enjoys spending time with (goat) kids! Really, you know, it was more that we were restraining ourselves, being selfless in trying to come up with ideas for your KID.
Hey! I love your by-line! I will have to copy it to my non blogging pals. Nine laps, good for you! I had started swimming, but I am desparate for a new suit, I am having MAJOR trouble finding one. What do I ask for? A 12 long, preferably one that is higher necked than scooped, x-backed to stay on, enough fabric to cover the extra boobalage, full front liner, no bra, is that too much????? Swimming totally does me in, it's the breathing thing, don't have it quite down yet. I go for about 20 minutes, then am done in! I think I get 12 laps in, in the slow lane!. Not much in the world of real swimmers, but I feel like I'm getting someplace, like you must! Am off to comment in your contest...
Wow! Those are some great suggestions!! I think that Neatnik is going to have a veeeery busy summer...
I'm here by way of Stumbling Over Chaos. I'd like to enter the contest but even though I tried to look for it, I didn't find Neatnik's age (I probably missed it). I'd like to suggest something age appropriate. Could you please add it to the contest entry? Thank you
